Is wearing lead crystal or drinking from it bad for you, because it is made from lead?

I almost bought a Swarovski crystal necklace, then at checkout, it had a little warning about it. What can you tell me about the risks?

Andrea, the lead in the “crystal” is added in order to makes the glass more “sparkly”. The amount is of such a low level that wearing it or even swallowing it would not be poisonous, as long as you don’t do swallowing it on a regular basis. Drinking from leaded glassware is the same thing, MOST folks tend to use their “crystal’ for “special occasions” anyway and rarely use it for everyday use.

Additionally, the lead atoms are incorporated into the molecular matrix of the silicon-dioxide (glass) and tends to be very stable in that lattice. There MAY be SOME lead atoms that are not bound in the lattice but most of that will leach out after a few washings. This can be speeded up by washing it in a weak solution of water and vinegar, once or twice. But, unless you are going to use your lead crystal on a daily basis OR swallow your Swarovski necklace, I wouldn’t worry about it very much.
